How To Take The Best Product Photos With Your Phone

How To Take The Best Product Photos With Your Phone - UNIQU

Posting high-quality images of your product is one of the best ways to increase your revenues. In a time where online shops are a dime a dozen, your crisp and clear photos would either make or break your store.

If you asked us for tips a decade ago, we would probably tell you to leave everything with the marketing experts. They have the studio and the equipment to shoot the product images you’re looking for. However, times have changed. With the introduction of powerful smartphones that are capable of shooting high-quality images, someone like you and me could already do our own photoshoot at home!

Before we go to the actual guide, at this point, you should already have an idea of the theme of your photoshoot. Depending on your product, there are a lot of options out there. Your creativity is the only limit. You can check platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest for some inspiration.

Here are some tips on how you can take the best product photos using only your smartphone:

  1. Pick a decent smartphone

We would be remiss if we didn’t start with this one. If you believe the Mac ecosystem is the right fit for you, then you can start with an iPhone SE 2020. It’s the cheapest one out there, but its camera is on par with the flagship models. If you’re more comfortable using Google’s network of applications, then the Google Pixel is a great option. Samsung Galaxy Ultra series is also a great choice. These two models are a bit pricier, but the image quality they produce is out on a professional level.

  1. Dedicate a space for your mini studio

You don’t have to rent a whole studio to shoot your product. You can have one at home but just make sure the spot is well-lighted. If it’s exposed to natural light, then much better. Set your backdrop. You can choose white as it’s the one commonly used. Taking product photos closer to the window creates a softer light with darker shadows. Being farther away from the light source will give you lighter and sharper shadows.

  1. Use a tripod

We get that it’s probably your first time doing a product photoshoot, and that’s okay! You probably noticed that your first few shots are a bit out of focus and blurry. That’s because your hands may have some slight, unnoticeable tremors that are affecting your phone camera’s image stabilization. To overcome this, you have to use a tripod. A tripod makes sure that your camera’s focus is locked in place so that the result will not be blurry.

  1. Experiment with the perfect angle

How do you want others to see your product? Let’s say you’re selling shoes. You can shoot it eye-level, slightly lower (to focus on the heels), bird’s eye (similar to looking at your shoes while wearing them), or slanted.

  1. Learn post-processing

Post-processing is simply what laymen know as “editing” or “photoshop.” The purpose of which is to enhance the photos to appear more appealing to the public. If a photo’s perfect but appears a bit dark, then just edit its brightness or sharpness.
